Industry Insight: Rapid Success of EsoBiotec’s FIH IIT Program & $1B Acquisition by AstraZeneca

2025/01/30
A landmark cell therapy industry milestone took place in early 2025: EsoBiotec kicked off its ESO-T01 First-in-Human investigator-initiated trial (FIH IIT) in Wuhan on January 8, 2025.
Merely 28 days after patient dosing, clinical data confirmed undetectable tumor cells in patient bone marrow, achieving outstanding early clinical efficacy.Subsequently, AstraZeneca completed the acquisition of EsoBiotec at USD 1 billion on March 17 of the same year, only two months following trial initiation.

The fast-track development from IIT launch to large-scale acquisition fully demonstrates the outstanding advantages of the IIT development path: shorter proof-of-concept cycle and lower R&D cost versus conventional IND routes for cell therapy projects.
